Passage 2

For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead. “We can do without railways,” people say, as if motorcars and planes made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they’re dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days when oil is expensive, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes.
Railways have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. But a railway doesn’t leave you as a plane does, miles and miles away from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a motorcar does, in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.
Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning. We have entered the age of superfast trains, traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon we will be wondering why we spend so much on motorways we can’t use because we don’t have enough money to buy oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason.

When you get off the plane you will find yourself right in the city center. D. No motorcar or plane can carry as many goods as a train does in a cheap way.
4.According to the author, the disadvantage of motorcars and planes is that ______. A. they cannot travel fast enough B. too much money will be spent on oil C. they cannot give a smooth, untroubled journey D. the travelers cannot enjoy the scene in their journey

We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they’re dying.(我們都不斷 聽到火車慢、賠錢,正在沒落)可知,我們總是聽到有人說火車速度慢,鐵路賠錢并且 正在沒落,所以 A 項“火車正在沒落”、C 項“火車很慢”、D 項“鐵路虧損”三項 都是有些人認為鐵路過時的原因。 In these days when oil is expensive, the railways have become highly competitive...(在燃油昂貴的日子里,鐵路變 得非常有競爭力)可知,現(xiàn)在的高油價使鐵路相比汽車和飛機非常具有競爭力,所以目 前油價高并不是鐵路過時的原因,B 項“如今石油很貴”符合題意,故選 B。
In these days when oil is expensive, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes.(在石油價格昂貴的今天,鐵路已經(jīng)成為汽車和飛機的競爭對手)和第二段最后 三句 But a railway doesn’t leave you as a plane does, miles and miles away from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a motorcar does, in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.(但是鐵路并不像飛機那樣離市 中心很遠。 Railways have much in common with planes(.
But a railway doesn’t leave you as a plane does, miles and miles away from the city center(. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes.(如果你想把人或貨物從一個地方運送到另一個地方,它們比飛機 便宜)可知,A 項“坐火車比坐飛機便宜”的表述正確,需排除;由第三段最后一句 Soon we will be wondering why we spend so much on motorways we can’t use because we don’t have enough money to buy oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason.(很快人們 就會思考為什么要花這么多錢在因為沒錢買油而負擔不起的汽車和飛機上)可知,D 項 “沒有汽車或飛機能以廉價的方式運載像火車那樣多的貨物”的表述正確,需排除。
Soon we will be wondering why we spend so much on motorways we can’t use because we don’t have enough money to buy oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason.(很快我們就會疑惑,為什么我們要花這么多錢在我們不能使用 的高速公路上,因為我們沒有足夠的錢購買石油,出于同樣的原因,我們也花費了太多 的錢在我們不能飛行的飛機上)可知,很快人們就會思考為什么要花這么多錢在因為沒 錢買油而負擔不起的汽車和飛機上。
