Mr. Ren was admitted in 1986 at 14 years of age into the SPECIAL CLASS for the GIFTED YOUTHS, my universitys unique program that caters to the intellectual needs of unusually talented Chinese youngsters. It was a rare privilege he earned with his nearly impeccable academic performance through the years of his elementary and secondary school.

He impressed me almost as he entered into my university, a major cradle of Chinas scientific and technological talents. At the time, members of the Gifted Class all had to spend half a month studying by themselves the principles of calculus and then take an exam so that we could evaluate their self-study capability. Mr. Ren scored the highest grade in that exam. He also exhibited a keenly whetted mind during class discussions. To my regret at the time, his English was not as good as his mathematics or physics. But I noticed he made a point of working especially hard in improving his English during his five undergraduate years with us. Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Management is a burgeoning field in China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England. The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly.

As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, I was so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?

With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, , I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work in this company. 國(guó)際交換生項(xiàng)目是我國(guó)最早的出國(guó)留學(xué)途徑,該項(xiàng)目是由國(guó)內(nèi)外主管教育的部門開展的國(guó)際教育交流項(xiàng)目,辦理的簽證為學(xué)術(shù)交流簽證,留學(xué)時(shí)間為1年,留學(xué)的學(xué)校多為各國(guó)公立大學(xué),一般學(xué)生沒(méi)有擇校的權(quán)利,所有的留學(xué)安排均有各國(guó)教育部門統(tǒng)一安排,留學(xué)費(fèi)用是所有留學(xué)途徑中最少的,安全上也是最有保障的,但是對(duì)學(xué)生的要求很高,學(xué)生必須是國(guó)家認(rèn)可的優(yōu)秀生,衡量標(biāo)準(zhǔn)因?qū)W生選擇的不同國(guó)家而定,不完全統(tǒng)一。因?yàn)榻粨Q生項(xiàng)目只有1年的時(shí)間,如果學(xué)生想繼續(xù)留在國(guó)外學(xué)習(xí),可以辦理轉(zhuǎn)簽證手續(xù),將學(xué)術(shù)簽證轉(zhuǎn)簽為留學(xué)生簽證,但是部分國(guó)家需要學(xué)生轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)到私立學(xué)校就讀。

出國(guó)留學(xué)如何請(qǐng)老師寫推薦信呢?相信很多學(xué)生都在為請(qǐng)老師寫推薦而煩惱。請(qǐng)老師寫推薦信并不是難事,要想成功得到推薦信,充分的準(zhǔn)備是非常必要的。比如在郵件最后附上個(gè)人簡(jiǎn)歷,及時(shí)和老師溝通等等。一起來(lái)看看吧。相信大家一定會(huì)收獲很多。 也許這篇文章講的內(nèi)容不是每個(gè)人都適用,僅僅是我自己這幾周以來(lái)的切身經(jīng)歷和體會(huì),希望能對(duì)正在準(zhǔn)備或有意向申請(qǐng)留學(xué)的朋友們有幫助。其中難免也有表達(dá)欠妥當(dāng)之處,還請(qǐng)更有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的同學(xué)指正。 無(wú)論是申英國(guó)還是美澳院校,留學(xué)文書最重要的部分都包括PS (Personal Statement)個(gè)人陳述和RL (Reference Letter)推薦信。PS當(dāng)然是自己寫,RL通常需要大學(xué)教授出具。能為自己爭(zhēng)取一份言辭懇切、內(nèi)容詳實(shí)的推薦信無(wú)疑可以為自己的申請(qǐng)加分。 我一共向這學(xué)期教我課的3位老師提出寫推薦信的請(qǐng)求,分別是實(shí)踐課Student Campus TV, 經(jīng)濟(jì)英語(yǔ)和德英翻譯。最后的結(jié)果是拿到了兩封,其中一封符合申請(qǐng)要求,也讓自己滿意。下面先以最終成功的來(lái)自德英翻譯課老師的推薦信為例,一步步講講從提出請(qǐng)求到獲得推薦信的過(guò)程;然后我也會(huì)總結(jié)一下另兩次嘗試不夠成功的原因。 Step 1:提出請(qǐng)求 如何請(qǐng)老師寫推薦信呢?我認(rèn)為最好當(dāng)面提出,這樣可以得到老師最直接的答復(fù)。如果沒(méi)有機(jī)會(huì),發(fā)郵件也可以。后者的好處是自己可以深思熟慮,組織好語(yǔ)言,避免與教授面對(duì)面的緊張和尷尬;壞處是可能許久得不到回復(fù)。我的翻譯課老師是個(gè)有郵件必及時(shí)回復(fù)的人,所以我用了第二種方式。 郵件標(biāo)題:Recommendation for [Your Name] 會(huì)不會(huì)太直白了?不,不要不好意思在標(biāo)題里“挑明”自己的目的,“開門見山”在此時(shí)其實(shí)是明智的做法。而且這一原則在正文部分要繼續(xù)堅(jiān)持。 正文: 我最初的思路是: 1. 先感謝老師在課堂上付出的時(shí)間,表示自己收獲很大; 2. 然后寫想申請(qǐng)某某大學(xué)的研究生項(xiàng)目; 3. 最后表示希望教授能為自己寫一份推薦信。 后來(lái)我突然意識(shí)到這是一個(gè)完全錯(cuò)誤的順序。有人玩笑說(shuō),西方人讀東方人的信函要從下往上讀,不然完全不知所云,因?yàn)閬?lái)信真正的目的往往出現(xiàn)在最末尾。這樣說(shuō)不是毫無(wú)道理。東方人重含蓄,西方人喜直接,這是東西方思維習(xí)慣上的迥異。所以尊重西方人的習(xí)慣,最終成文的順序正好相反,顛倒成3.2.1。字體可用Arial,5號(hào)。 這是我給老師的第一封郵件: Dear Dr. [Surname or full name], 【說(shuō)明來(lái)函目的】 My name is Yi Fan and I have taken part in your course “Translation I” (Group J). I am writing to ask if you would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for me. 【解釋需要推薦信的原因】 I would like to further my study in the field of translation and am planning to apply for the graduate program MA in Translating and Interpreting in Great Britain after returning to China. So it would be of great help if I could receive a letter of recommendation from you in support of the application. I would really appreciate it. Here with I also send the writing by myself and my resume with more detailed information. [注] 【寫明deadline and how you will follow up】 I am going back to China at the end of this week. Best regards, Yi Fan 【注】解釋兩件事: 1. 我在郵件里附上了自己寫好的草稿和個(gè)人簡(jiǎn)歷。原則上說(shuō),推薦信應(yīng)該完全由教授寫,但是我相信大學(xué)教授們公務(wù)已經(jīng)很繁忙,不會(huì)閑到有時(shí)間為我們斟詞酌句,從空白的紙上寫出費(fèi)時(shí)又費(fèi)力得推薦信。但如果是在現(xiàn)有的草稿上修改就不一樣了,這不僅會(huì)為他們減輕很多工作量,而且能讓他們知道你想在推薦信里強(qiáng)調(diào)自己哪方面的能力,從而最終的結(jié)果也更能meet your expectations.即使不寫完整的草稿,也要在郵件中提供詳細(xì)的信息和材料。附上最基本的簡(jiǎn)歷能為教授提供被推薦人的經(jīng)歷的大致輪廓,畢竟他們沒(méi)有理由為一個(gè)自己根本不了解的學(xué)生寫推薦。 2. 那么這些文件是以附件形式還是正文形式發(fā)送呢?這是申請(qǐng)中的老問(wèn)題。
