澳大利亞此前從未發(fā)布過大學(xué)排行榜，此次由一個相對權(quán)威的第三方機(jī)構(gòu)澳大利亞學(xué)術(shù)研究理事會首度公布排行榜，一經(jīng)推出就引起了澳大利亞國內(nèi)外教育界的關(guān)注。這份報告被普遍認(rèn)為具有毋庸置疑的權(quán)威性和綜合性。主編機(jī)構(gòu)澳大利亞學(xué)術(shù)研究理事會自1965年成立后就成為澳大利亞資助基礎(chǔ)研究的兩大機(jī)構(gòu)之一，主要職責(zé)是為政府提供研究資助和政策建議促進(jìn)澳大利亞最高水平的科學(xué)研究和研究培訓(xùn)。此項報告歷時將近4年，運(yùn)用了科學(xué)嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)臄?shù)據(jù)收集整理分析方法，得到了全國所有大學(xué)和科研院所的大力支持，其權(quán)威性不言而喻。
此份報告把所有的研究領(lǐng)域分為了八個方向，包括物理學(xué)、化學(xué)與地球科學(xué);人文科學(xué)與創(chuàng)新藝術(shù);工程學(xué)與環(huán)境科學(xué);社會，行為與經(jīng)濟(jì)科學(xué);數(shù)學(xué)、信息與計算機(jī)科學(xué);生物科學(xué)與生物技術(shù)等。而每個領(lǐng)域下面又分有若干小的方向。評估滿分為5分，3分=世界水平，4分=世界領(lǐng)先水平，5分=世界水平前列。如果某一個大學(xué)在某一個方向得到3分，則意味著此大學(xué)在這個方向上達(dá)到了世界水準(zhǔn)。
